Temperance houses, old and new
The Census Bureau's American Community Survey (2020 to 2024) counts about 3,900 homes in the Temperance area. The median home was built in 1981. About a third were built between 1960 and 1979, and about 45 percent were built in 1990 or later. Roughly three out of four are single-family detached houses, and about a quarter of households rent.
In the 1960s and 1970s houses, the furnace may be the second or third one the house has had, while the ductwork is often still the original. A newer furnace hooked to old ducts can run loud, cycle on and off, or leave the far bedrooms short of heat if the return air was never sized for it. It makes sense to look at the ducts and the furnace together before deciding on anything.
In the houses built since 1990, the original furnace and air conditioner may still be running. Equipment from the 1990s or early 2000s is old enough that repair or replace becomes a fair question. We'll give you a straight answer either way. Our article on deciding between furnace repair and replacement walks through the same things we look at.
Gas, electric, and what to do when something is wrong
About 87 percent of Temperance households heat with natural gas, and about 11 percent heat with electricity. The electric-heat homes usually have a heat pump or an electric furnace, and those need a different kind of checkup.
- If you smell gas, leave the house first. Michigan Gas Utilities asks customers to leave the area and call them about any gas odor. Once the gas company has made it safe, we can find out what went wrong with the furnace or water heater.
- If the power goes out, a gas furnace stops too, because the blower and controls run on electricity. If the power comes back and the heat doesn't, check the thermostat and the furnace switch before you call.

Keeping a Temperance system in shape
A furnace tune-up in the fall and an A/C tune-up in the spring catch most small problems before they turn into a no-heat or no-cooling call. Between visits, change the filter on schedule. If you'd rather not keep track, a VIP maintenance plan covers both tune-ups every year, and we call you to set up each visit. Here's what a tune-up includes.
What a visit costs
- Repair or diagnostic visit: $99. A technician finds the problem and gives you a repair quote before any work starts. The $99 covers the visit and diagnosis. VIP members pay no visit fee.
- Furnace tune-up: $135. Full heating tune-up and safety inspection, including a carbon monoxide check.
- A/C tune-up: $135. Full cooling tune-up, coil cleaning and system check.
- VIP maintenance plans: The 1-year VIP is $199, the 3-year VIP is $523, and the 5-year VIP is $846. Each plan covers a furnace tune-up and an A/C tune-up every year.

They came fast and with his tools and knowledge the Tec found the problem fast, he got a part and installed it, and the furnace kicked right on, I’m very and if I need service again I’ll call this company
Great price Friendly, professional and thorough. They performed routine maintenance on my system. Services: A/C system maintenance
Christian was great. Fair pricing, showed up same day and called to say he could come sooner as we were without AC. Diagnosed the problem, solved it and got us signed up for the annual maintenance plan for the AC/Furnace. Would highly recommend.
Questions from Temperance homeowners
- Temperance is right next to Toledo. Which office do I call?
- Call our Monroe office at (734) 384-3910. Every Michigan home we serve, Temperance included, is handled from Monroe. Our Toledo office, about 8 miles away by road, takes care of homes on the Ohio side of the line.
- My Temperance house was built in the 1970s. What should I have checked?
- Have the furnace and the ductwork looked at together. A house from that era may be on its second or third furnace while still using its original ducts, and a mismatch can cause noise, uneven heat and short cycling. A furnace tune-up includes a safety inspection and a carbon monoxide check, and the technician can tell you if the ducts are holding the system back.
- Who do I call if I smell gas in my Temperance home?
- Leave the house and call Michigan Gas Utilities, the gas company for Bedford Township, from outside. If anyone feels sick or a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, get out and call 911. Once the gas company says it is safe, call us and we will find out why it happened.
