Filters: When to change them & How

Welcome to the ‘How-To’ guide for all things filters, whether it be needing to know when you are supposed to change them or you have no idea on the how. This blog is here to help answer both of those problems, making it so you can do it without needing a technician out.

First up: WHEN

The ‘when’ portion of this blog is less of a definite time and more of a how to determine when you should change it. Just remember that every household could be different, it all just depends on the factors.

• You should try to inspect your filters monthly, especially during peak seasons like summer and winter
• Different filter types have varying lifespans, follow manufacturer guidelines or what is already in your system if you haven’t had previous problems
• If your filter looks dirty or clogged, it’s time for a replacement regardless of the time frame
• Take factors like pet hair, allergies, and indoor air quality into consideration. Homes with pets or allergy sufferers may require more frequent changes
• Pollen, dust, and other airborne particles can increase during certain seasons, resulting in possible frequent filter changes

Finally: HOW

The ‘How’ might be the part that keeps people from doing it themselves, which is fine. There are times where having a professional out is just easier.

• Shut off your HVAC system to prevent debris from circulating during the replacement process
• Find the filter compartment, it’s typically near the return air duct(the ductwork coming off side of furnace) or air handler
• Take out the old filter carefully, noting its orientation for proper replacement
• Slide the new filter into place, ensuring it’s facing the correct direction according to the airflow arrows
• Close the filter compartment securely, ensuring there are no gaps where air could bypass the filter
• Once the new filter in installed, turn your HVAC system back on and monitor its performance

The regular filter changes improve indoor air quality, enhance system efficiency, and prolong the lifespan of your HVAC equipment.
